First off, lets identify a few scenarios where an interior designer should be the first professional you call:

FIVE SCENARIOS WHEN HIRING AN INTERIOR DESIGNER IS A MUST:

  1. After a New Home Purchase

  2. For Major Renovation Projects

  3. If you have limited design knowledge or are feeling overwhelmed

  4. If you don’t have the time to manage a project

  5. If you’re looking for custom furniture and finishings

#1 After a New Home Purchase

Congratulations on your new home! We understand that, while a fresh start is exciting, the process of turning a house into a home can be a bit overwhelming.

Hiring an interior designer at this milestone can be a game-changer and can help you prioritize your endless to-do list and save you from costly mistakes down the line. An experienced interior designer can help you:

  • Identify areas of your new home that need updating the most

  • Help you to determine the most valuable areas to update for both your home value and lifestyle (and which areas to save for later)

  • Create a cohesive paint and material color palette for the entire home

  • Help you to make informed decisions about which furniture to reuse and which to replace.

#2 For Major Renovation Projects

Undertaking major renovations is a significant commitment and is precisely the scenario where an interior designer becomes an indispensable partner. Whether it's revamping your kitchen, renovating bathrooms, or adding new living spaces, an experienced designer ensures that the redesign not only enhances aesthetics but also maximizes functionality by creating a cohesive design plan tailored to your specific needs and lifestyle.

This personalized approach ensures that the new space is not only beautiful but also functions for your specific lifestyle to optimize your daily living experience. Additionally, designers can introduce custom elements, and curate bespoke furniture and finishes, adding a distinctive character that reflects your personality and elevates the overall design.

Beyond aesthetics, an interior designer serves will serve as a decision-making ally, streamlining the myriad of choices inherent in a renovation project and helping to curb your decision fatigue.

We act as a strategic guide, alleviating the overwhelm associated with renovations by breaking down the project into manageable steps.

Our role can even extend to overseeing and managing the implementation of the project, ensuring precise execution and efficient collaboration with contractors. This comprehensive approach not only realizes design aspirations but also minimizes errors, delays, and miscommunications (and the costs associated with those), resulting in a transformed space that aligns with your vision and life.

#3 If You Have Limited Design Knowledge or Are Feeling Overwhelmed

Not everyone is born with an innate sense of design, and that's perfectly okay. If the world of color theory, spatial arrangements, and material selection feels like uncharted territory, an interior designer is your compass.

We bring a wealth of design knowledge (not to mention technical expertise), guiding you through the creative process. From choosing the right furnishings to harmonizing color schemes, an interior designer ensures your home reflects your taste while adhering to fundamental design principles.

#4 If You Don’t Have Time to Manage a Project

Life is busy, and finding time to dedicate to a design project can be challenging. When time constraints are a factor, an interior designer becomes your time-saving ally.

Hiring an interior designer means we pull together your vision from our myriad of sources and bring you the final concepts to approve or tweak as you see fit. No more spending your precious weekends deliberating over 10 different tiles because your contractor needs an answer on Monday.

We also take on the project management responsibilities, ensuring timelines are met, contractors are coordinated, and the implementation of the design plan progresses smoothly. With an interior designer at the helm, you can focus on your daily priorities while your vision comes to life.

#5 If You’re Looking for Custom Furniture & Finishes

For those seeking a touch of exclusivity and uniqueness in their living spaces, investing in custom furniture and bespoke design elements is a natural inclination. This is precisely when an interior designer's network of resources and skilled artisans becomes invaluable. We have access to exclusive materials and furnishings, collaborate with craftsmen to create custom pieces, and curate finishes that elevate your home to a truly unique and custom experience tailored specifically for you.

Ok, so now we’ve explored scenarios where you definitely should be calling an interior designer. Lets explore a few scenarios in which an interior designer may not be the best fit for you…

5 SCENARIOS WHERE AN INTEIROR DESIGNER ISN’T A GOOD FIT:

  1. If you have an extremely limited budget

  2. If you consider yourself a DIYer

  3. If you have very strong design preferences (and don’t want to give up control)

  4. If your project is very small

  5. If you have previous design or construction expertise

#1 If you have an extremely limited budget

If your budget is extremely limited, hiring an interior designer might not be the best choice. While we do help our clients save time, money, and mistakes, full-service interior design is a professional service that comes with an invesetment. It may not be worth investing in for someone who isn’t willing to invest in heirloom quality pieces or high quality craftsmanship and construction.

That doesn’t mean you have to go about it alone, many designers (including us!) offer services tailored specifically for our clients who may not be ready to invest in a full-service design plan, like our Designer for a Day package or Design Only package.

#2 If you consider yourself a DIYer

If you thrive on DIY projects and enjoy the challenge of figuring out design solutions on your own, you might find the process of working with an interior designer constraining. Some individuals find joy in the hands-on, trial-and-error aspects of home design and don’t mind living in a construction zone for extended periods while spending weekends completing projects.

If this sounds like you, you’re awesome and we’re super impressed! if it’s not - an interior designer can save you time, money, and mistakes with experience gleaned from dozens of previous projects to ensure you get quality work and a beautiful home in a reasonable time frame.

#3 If you have very strong design preferences (and/or don’t want to give up control)

Let me explain this one, we love it when our clients have their own tastes and strong likes/dislikes, but if you find it difficult to give up control and “trust the process” or want to make all of the individual design decisions on your own, then the collaborative process in working with an interior designer may feel restrictive.

One of the main benefits of working with an interior designer is the “done for you” approach with your home. We spend hours in showrooms so you don’t have to and bring you only the best products we can find for your space to approve.

However, if you relish in the idea of curating every detail yourself, from paint color schemes, furniture choices and art selection, window treatments, and casework design, then opting to go solo could be a fulfilling approach.

#4 If your project is very small

When it comes to smaller scale projects, hiring an interior designer may not always be necessary or worth the investment. If you’re looking to make minor updates or changes that don’t involve major renovations or a complete redesign of your space, you may find that a full service interior designer isn’t required.

However, even if you have a limited budget or are looking to make small and incremental changes, there are still opportunities to benefit form the expertise of an interior designer. While full-service interior design comes with an investment, many designers, including us, offer tailored services that cater to clients with varying budget and/or time constraints. For instance, our “Designer for a Day” package or even our 90-minute Design Consultation is designed specifically for clients who may not be ready to invest in a comprehensive design plan. Options like these allow you to access professional insights on a smaller scale, making design assistance more accessible and budget-friendly.

#5 If you have previous design or construction expertise

If you have previous renovation experience you understand the intricate web of decisions and logistics involved - from coordinating with various trades, to managing the details of the entire project. If you’re comfortable managing trades and overseeing work from contractors, including making sure they’re conforming to your design intent - you may not need the “construction administration” duties many interior designers provide (including us!).

Some of our clients do feel comfortable with the construction and implementation side of things but need some help with the decision making process and pulling the design together. If that sounds like you, our “Design Only” package would be a good fit, which you can learn more about in our Services and Investment Guide.

The decision to hire an interior designer ultimately hinges on your unique circumstances, preferences, and the scale of your home project. Whether embarking on a new home purchase, tackling major renovations, feeling overwhelmed by design choices, facing time constraints, or desiring custom furniture and finishes, an interior designer can be your invaluable partner in creating a home that reflects your style and meets your practical needs.

On the flip side, if you're on an extremely limited budget, relish in DIY projects, have strong design preferences that you want to manage independently, are dealing with small-scale projects, or possess previous design expertise, hiring an interior designer may not be the best fit for you.

Remember, the goal is to make your home project a rewarding and enjoyable experience. If you find yourself at the crossroads, consider reaching out for a consultation to explore how our tailored services can align with your specific needs and constraints.
